In 2020, Suntup Editions—publisher of sumptuous and sought-after limited editions—announced they would be producing their edition of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. For this limited “Artist Edition,” Suntup approached us to design the jacket as a Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight candy wrapper—the very same candy bar in which Charlie finds his glorious Golden Ticket. It was truly a thrill to collaborate with Suntup on their scrumdiddlyumptious edition of this timeless classic!
• 17.25 x 9.25 • gold foil stamping on the spine and seal on the front cover • 25 golden tickets printed 1-color on gold cardstock • 368 pages, 4-color hardcover book
Art Direction by Paul Suntup
It was a sweet treat to not have to put the title on the front cover! Because the book is so iconic—and because it was only sold online within a slipcase—we could get away with the actual title only appearing on the spine, which helps complete the illusion of the jacket being a candy wrapper.
Being that the book was written in the’ 60s, we used candy packaging from that era as inspiration for the customized typography and color palette. We applied texture and offsetting effects to get that retro-printed look.
In true Wonka fashion, 25 random copies concealed a Golden Ticket, which the lucky winner could redeem for prizes, including valuable books and gift cards.
