Stories of the Black Hills
An official tie-in for HBO’s award-winning show Deadwood, this book provides insight into the making of the series and the historical figures who inspired it. We aimed for the design to reflect the beautifully intricate printed materials of America in the 1870s, along with the raw violence and rugged mayhem of the show. To achieve this, we incorporated historically authentic typography, aged and distressed photos, and even the occasional splattering of blood.
• 8 x 9.25 • debossed cover, die-cut tip-on uncoated sticker • 232 pages, 4-color hardback book
The customized typography for the character profiles is created from historically accurate letterforms scanned from old ephemera, incorporating numerous type styles that have never been converted to fonts.
The chapter openers are distinguished from the character profiles by a clean, systematic design and color palette, while still incorporating historical typefaces.
