Dear Evan Hansen: Through the Window offers an inside look into the creation and production of the musical, and was written by the show’s creators Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul. It includes interviews with the writers, director, and actors, providing insight into the creative process and the evolution of the story. The book is richly illustrated with production photos and portraits shot exclusively for the book, as well as set and costume designs and cut scenes. The libretto was annotated by Levenson, Pasek & Paul.

The book cover was inspired by Evan’s iconic broken arm — the case material is textured like a cast, and a sharpie drawing of Evan based off the show’s poster is blind debossed in the corner of the cover. We took the branding blue color and ran with it — we had the book’s edges stained in royal blue, used 2 different blue pigment stamps on the cover and spine, and color-drenched the whole interior in shades of blue.
For portraits shot exclusively for this book, each cast member performed a key scene directly into the camera to capture the intense emotionality expressed in the show.
The annotations are set on translucent rectangles, reminiscent of the large background screens in the set design that project social media messages.
The libretto is the only section where we utilize full color images, allowing moments of vibrant color to burst out of all the shades of blue.
